RESOTUNE (tm) Plays crystal time based precision
tones through two bottom mounted loudspeakers, then listens to the drum
head as it vibrates in response with two microphones also mounted on the
bottom. By sweeping over the tuning range and listening for resonant
peaks RESOTUNE very precisely identifies and saves the fundamental note
and the first overtone. RESOTUNE then captures a very specific reference
measurement for the one lug close to it. This reference data is then
used to measure the other lugs for fine adjustment. The front panel
CLEAR LEDs even show which direction to turn the lug being measured to
perfectly match the reference. When all lugs have been adjusted to
indicate CLEAR (green LED), they will be matched to a much higher
precision than possible with any other tuning approach. You will
experience an open "Clear" drum tone than sounds great and even feels
good to play. I have even had customers report that they were able for
the first time to clear a problem drum they've owned for years. Caveat,
we can't promise to make problem drums wonderful but the direct
measurement of sound coming from the drum head instead of measuring some
related mechanical characteristic has a a better chance of success.
While this remarkable ability to clear drum heads
to high precision is benefit enough, the RESOTUNE electronics allow you
to also tune to specific notes, and/or measure and capture the precise
tuning you are at and store for future use.
The figure below shows typical tuner orientation
to read the lug with key inserted for tuning/clearing. Dotted lines show
orientation for adjusting next lug to the right. In general you should
only need to make large adjustments to each lug only once, It is good
practice to make a second round of measurements is one or more lugs were
way off.

Now that clearing drum heads and restoring favorite
tunings is a relatively simple procedure you will now be free to explore
unconventional voicing and perhaps even pay more attention to the actual
notes we tune our drums to. If a tuning experiment doesn't work, it's
relatively simple to just return to your previous tuning and try
something else. Our goal in
developing the RESOTUNE system is to provide the measurement tool to
read exactly what your drums are doing in real time, not to tell you how
to tune or voice your drums. Please see
about drums page for more general discussion about tuning and how
drums resonate.
